How to File an Income Tax Extension

1.

Go to your local post office or download Form 4868 from the Internal Revenue Service's Web site. It's titled, "Application for Extension of Time to File."

2.

Complete and return the Form 4868 to the IRS.

3.

Along with Form 4868, include a payment of your estimated taxes due to the government.

4.

Take advantage of the extra time to pull together all your receipts and paperwork. The extension is for six months only.

5.

Complete your tax paperwork by October 15.

Tips and Warnings

  • Remember, this is an extension of time, not an extension of payment. You must send a payment of your estimated taxes due to the government.
