How to Locate Unclaimed Taxes

1.

Log on to the website of the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators, a nonprofit organization affiliated with the National Association of State Treasurers and the Council of State Governments. The website address is unclaimed.org.

2.

Locate your state on the map and click on it. You will be connected to the website of the state you chose. If you have lived in more than one state, be sure to return to the unclaimed.org site to search those states as well.

3.

Enter your last name in the box, as well as the first few letters of your first name. Only the last name is required, but the more information you can provide, the more accurate your results will be.

4.

Repeat the search using any other names you have used, i.e. maiden name. Contact the state using the claim form if you locate an unclaimed tax refund or rebate.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you filed for a federal refund and have not received the money or any letter from the IRS about it, go to the Where's My Refund? site at www.irs.gov. It will tell you if your refund was sent and how to claim the check you didn't receive.
