Information on West Virginia Tax Returns

Filing requirements

All people living in West Virginia for all or part of a year must file a state tax return. Individuals who earned income in West Virginia must file a state tax return, even if they live in another state.

West Virginia provides a number of tax forms for different types of filers. Forms include resident forms, part-year resident forms and non-resident forms. A form also exists for individuals involved in partnerships and other business agreements. The West Virginia State Tax Department offers all of its forms online.

West Virginia grants liberal extensions for tax filers. Schedule L is West Virginia's extension request. You may request the same six-month extension available for federal tax returns, or specify any date you prefer up to six months. Schedule L must be filed before the regular April tax return deadline.
