Social Security Application Information
The Social Security website recommends that applicants first estimate their retirement benefits before filling out the application to apply for Social Security, as this will help answer some of the questions on the application. The online benefit estimator is located on the Social Security website. You can access it by first going to the "Acknowledgement for Online Services" page (see References for a link).
To apply for Social Security benefits online, go to the Social Security website (see Resources for a link) and click on "Retirement/Medicare" at the top of the page. This will take you to the online Social Security application.
Apply by Phone
Call 800-772-1213 to apply for Social Security benefits by phone. Representatives are available from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Check the Application Status
Check the status of your Social Security application by going to the Web page linked in Resources and clicking on "Check the Status of Your Application" on the left side of the page. You will be asked to provide your Social Security number to access the information.
Once you have applied, Social Security administrators will review your application and determine if any other documents are needed. If more documentation is needed, the Social Security Administration will contact you. Once the application is processed, applicants will receive a decision letter in the mail.
